The David K Jones label, will harbour a relaxed, intimate endeavour from a two-acre block in Avoca with plans to plant a chardonnay vineyard.

“All my wines are very quirky. They’ve all got this eccentric story behind them, there’s not one which is made the same as the other which is why they have so much personality.”

David started work at the Yellowglen sparkling wine house for Ian Home and Dominic Landragin in 1983-1984.

In 1985, David then relocated to the small village of Moonambel in the heart of the Pyrenees wine region to take up the reins at the family vineyard “Dalwhinnie” under the direction of his father Dr. Ewan C. Jones.

David made his first memorable wine in 1986, he called it “The Eagle”.

The 1990s brought quality and consistency to the wines by employing wine consultant Gary Baldwin from Wine-Net. The small farm gate wine business was maturing into a quality wine company, wine channels grew not only nationally but internationally where Dalwhinnie Wines were consumed at the finest restaurants around the world. Jennifer Jones’ influence was invaluable.

David also liked to dabble with the finicky grape variety Pinot Noir. His wine making included leaving the Pinot Noir wine in small oak vessels for up to 18 months to build complexity into the wine.

A 2001 vintage Dalwhinnie Pinot Noir was recently spotted on a wine list in Spain by David’s eldest daughter Guinevere Jones. When Guinevere asked the Wine Brother “how did my families wine end up on the El Celler de Can Roca’s wine list in Girona, Spain?”. The Wine Brother replied “Because it is good wine and it is different.” This answer sums up David pretty well.
